Ms. Szumlinski is a nationally-recognized leader in long-term care, with a wealth of experience in virtually every operational and clinical aspect of the industry. She has experience as an Owner/Provider, Administrator, Director of Nursing, Corporate Quality Assurance Coordinator, and independent consultant. In the last 8 years, she has personally conducted over 1,000 on-site risk management visits at facilities across the country, touching every acuity level within the long-term care spectrum. As a nationally recognized presenter for health care associations on current trends and best practices in the long-term care industry, Ms. Szumlinski is the author of hundreds of best-practice bulletins, in-service modules, and has hosted hundreds of risk management seminars across the country. Respected for success in assisting facilities in achieving and maintaining regulatory compliance, Ms. Szumlinski served two terms as an Associate Board Member for NCAL, is a member of the AHCA Survey/Regulatory Committee and served as a team leader for the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award program for 8 years. ANGIE SZUMLINSKI

Andrea DeLand has nearly 20 years of experience as a regulatory and civil defense attorney and risk manager for healthcare providers nationally. She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Health Studies and from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where she was recognized for her success in the studies of medical malpractice, insurance law, and equities/remedies.

Ms. DeLand is committed to member advocacy and has extensive expertise in civil, criminal, and regulatory defense matters as they relate to Senior Living providers and professionals. Prior to her legal career, Ms. DeLand was dedicated to serving the Senior Living provider community, where has served in various capacities including volunteering with resident activities and events; training all departments on new and/or revised policies and procedures and serving as an assistant administrator. Ms. Deland began her legal career at the Kitch firm as a law clerk, rising to the Associate Principal level and served as Of Counsel for Clark Hill as well as the Director of Corporate Compliance for a multi-facility provider.

Ms. Hamblen was educated at the University of Kentucky and presently is President of Hamblen Healthcare Consulting. She previously was Executive Vice President of Risk Management for Multi-State Health Care Management group overseeing ten Nursing Home/Transitional Care facilities in Kentucky and Ohio. Cathy worked in the Acute Care setting for 23 years with a focus on Orthopedics and Management. She has worked as a Risk Manager for HealthCap since 2017. Cathy currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

CATHY HAMBLEN

Ms. Wilcox is a Registered Nurse with 30 years of clinical experience in the long-term care profession including clinical and operations management. During her successful career, Ms. Wilcox focused on quality improvement, risk management, and corporate compliance programs. Ms. Wilcox is a Legal Nurse Consultant who performs case reviews and occasionally acts as an expert defense witness. She consults in long-term care and assisted living facilities to assist them in risk management and quality improvement programs, policy and procedure development, and implementation of Electronic Health Records. She became certified as an Infection Preventionist in 2020.

CHERYL WILCOX

Ms. Long is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and a Registered and licensed Occupational Therapist. She served as the Chief of Occupational Therapy in an acute care hospital, Rehabilitation Regional Manager for 22 skilled nursing facilities, Director of Operations in 8 Florida Rehabilitation Departments, and a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and Consultant to skilled and assisted nursing facilities with a national company. She completed audits of charts for a national SNF corporation prior to being sent for pre-payment review with recommendations to maximize revenues and conducted reviews for a Federal retrospective audit for the OIG. She conducts detailed Rehabilitation Reviews for attorneys, corporations, and communities for corporate compliance. A nationally utilized electronic incident management and assessment program utilizes her expertise in making personalized recommendations for high-risk incidents. She has created and presented educational programs approved by ANCC and authored articles published in an industry newsletter.

DONNA LONG

With a strong passion for resident care, dignity of life and focus on exceptional healthcare, Joy Schultz has worked in the long-term care industry since 1983. She has served in many roles over the years, managing for-profit and not-for-profit nursing homes, as well as CCRC’s. Ms. Schultz is currently an Independent Consultant providing risk management services, where she partners with healthcare facilities to reduce their risk including a focus on resident care, education, the day-to-day workforce, and facility operations.

Joy continues to be a licensed nursing home administrator, a certified Assisted Living Manager, and a member of the Iowa Health Care Association, where she served on the Board of Directors and the Iowa Center for Assisted Living (ICAL) Board for 6 years. Also serving on the Quality Committee, she spent two years as co-chair and worked on the Quality First subcommittee, participating in a federal initiative for a commitment to putting quality first in all nursing homes. Ms. Schultz has spent several years on the Steering Team of IPDCC (Iowa Person Directed Care Coalition), working with DIA, DEA, ICA, IAHSA, and the state's educational facilities, working to change the environment in healthcare facilities across the state. The commission of the committee was to allow the residents to direct their care and to provide the most home-like environment possible. Joy also served on the Iowa Rural Health Association board of directors, for two years, promoting issues pertinent to Rural Iowa.

Kayla Herron is an experienced healthcare professional with over 10 years managing and working alongside interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Her healthcare career began with Admissions and Marketing and progressed to leadership roles managing overall facility operations. Prior to healthcare, she worked in the property and casualty insurance field and has continued to maintain that licensure in addition to her LNHA.

Kayla successfully directed corporate compliance, culture change, and the communications required during the onset of COVID-19. In the spring of 2021, she voluntarily left the industry to stay home with her two children, however, a return soon followed where she assisted an AFC with navigating the licensure and the opening process. If asked, she will describe healthcare leadership as more than just a job- it’s a lifestyle that requires passion, dedication, and commitment.

Lisa O’Neill is the program coordinator for HCRMS and an assisted living Risk Manager. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and is a Certified Assisted Living Administrator (CALD) and Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP). Ms. O’Neill is experienced in skilled nursing facilities, and has held positions as a Social Work designee, accounts payables/receptionist, and unit secretary/
medical records.

Ms. Christensen has worked in senior living for over 30 years in a variety of capacities and roles.  She has a diverse background in all areas of operations and clinical expertise. She has been a Director of Nursing, Nursing Home Administrator, Executive Director, and Vice President of Operations. She holds a Registered Nurse License, Nursing Home Administrator License, and Assisted Living Director Certicate. She obtained an Associate's Degree in Nursing in 1993 and a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration in 2005 from Regis University in Denver, Colorado. She is experienced in clinical management, operations management, administration, policy and procedure development, and auditing and monitoring for compliance.  She most recently started her own independent consulting business for senior living operators and related providers in the senior living space.  She has multi-state experience in consulting.

SANDY CHRISTENSEN

Ms. Mastropietro is an RN with more than 30 years of experience. She started her career in acute care and worked in MS, ER, and Pediatrics, then continued into administration resulting in a CNO for an acute care hospital. In 2000, she switched directions and moved into the LTC industry as a DON in a facility that specialized in TBI. She became certified as a CRRN (Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse) and remained a DON in LTC until 2015. She achieved a nursing citation-free survey and has also been successful with IDR’s development and submission. She is well versed in the LTC industry including regulatory requirements and how to achieve them.
